From Bad to Worse

From Bad to Worse is a photography project documenting shitty chance experiences in my life. It is an attempt to articulate my pessimistic worldview. I believe shittiness arises from compounded day-to-day events and a petty, selfish and impatient attitude. For example, shittiness is waiting in line at the grocery store in front of someone who keeps sighing impatiently, or cussing under your breath at drivers who cut you off and feeling guilty about lacking compassion. But shittiness also has a social dimension; it is informed by myths like freedom and the rich, carefree life. Squeezed between the paradox of immediate gratification and constant economic pressure, I am concerned with being destined for disappointment. Surprisingly, the process of making this work gives me a healthier perspective by acknowledging that daily tribulations are universal. I hope this series offers a glint of schadenfreude and humor, a mild ameliorative in light of the overwhelming impossibility of transcendence.
Drawings, a video and an audio project are complementary explorations of shitty chance experiences and related sarcasm and vernacular.
