Flag snowflake

I continue my investigation of dollar-store goods, modest pleasures and decorative impulses with Flag Snowflakes. This series is made by combining two materials—stick-on flags and neon letter-sized paper. Both function to attract viewers' attentions. In Flag Snowflakes, the flags point inwardly towards their forms and outwardly beyond the page. The flags come in four colors, and the paper in five; the flags' translucence and adhesive—which enhances saturation—allow a wider color spectrum. The flags' matte surfaces also draw attention to the paper's reflectivity; instances of this perceptual effect can especially be seen with the yellow flags on yellow paper (#7 and #18 are good examples). I am fascinated with how these modest, everyday materials convey exuberance and pleasure.
